Phrases
EXERCISE 1
Underline  the  prepositional,  participial,  gerund  and  infinitive phrases in each sentence, and then state whether they function as noun, adjective or adverb phrases.

Example: The boy sitting near me was reading a book about pirates.
                                (adj. phrase)                                   (adj. phrase)
1- Many children with talent performed at the concert for the Red Cross.
2- Paul drove around the block, looking for a parking space.
3- Delayed by a storm, the ship came into port a day late.
4- With growing interest, we listened to the story.
5- Joining clubs is a way of meeting new people.
Bài làm:
1-      Many children with talent performed at the concert for the Red Cross
“with talent” = adj ph modify “many children”
“at the concert” = adv ph of place modify “performed”
“for the Red Cross” = adj ph modify “the concert”

2-      Paul drove around the block, looking for a parking space.
“around the block”= adv ph of place modify “drove”
“looking for a parking apace”= “he looks for a parking space” = adj ph modify “Paul”

3-      Delayed by a storm, the ship came into port a day late.

4-      With growing interest , we listened to the story.
“with growing interest” = adv ph modify “listened to”

5-      Joining clubs is a way of meeting new people.
“joining clubs” = noun ph as a subject.
“of meeting new people”= adj ph modify “way”


EXERCISE 2

1-      To be successful doesn't necessarily mean to be wealthy.
“to be successful” = noun ph as subject.
“to be wealthy” = noun ph as subject complement ( to be successful)
Chú ý: Verb = to mean được hiểu 2 nghĩa:
            + to mean = link verb = có nghĩa là
                        Eg: To live means to struggle
            +to mean = Transtive Verb = có ý định là
                        Eg: I don’t mean to disturb you

2-      Alex, looking very unhappy , was leaning against the fence , watching the game.

3-      Our neighbors across the street are moving to a house around the corner.

4-      Our first job, painting the fence, took all morning.
“painting the fence” = noun ph as subject = đây là trường hợp đồng vị ngữ. Tức lúc này Noun phrase = adj phrase, tuy nhiên “painting the fence” modify cho ai ? >> hợp lý nhất là làm chủ từ tức rơi vào trường hợp Đồng Vị Ngữ.

5-      The birds, made bold by hunger, came to the doorstep for food.


EXERCISE 3
Join the two clauses or sentences by using participial phrases.

1- The mother smiled happily. She took the baby in her arms.
2- She remembered that she had left the key at home, so she came back to get it.
3- While I was walking along the street, I saw a terrible accident.
4- The bridge was destroyed by US bombings. It is being rebuilt now.
5- Although I had to admit he was right, I did not like it.

Ø  Smiling happily, My mother took the baby in her arms.

2-      She remembered that she had left the key at home, so she came back to get it.
Ø  Remembering that she had left the key at home, she come back to get it.

3-      While I was walking along the street, I saw a terrible accident
Ø  While walking along the street, I saw a terrible accident.

4-      The bridge was destroyed by US bombings. It is being rebuilt now.
Ø  The bridge, destroyed by US bombings, is being rebuilt now.
Ø  Destroyed by US bombings, the bridge is being rebuilt now.

5-      Although I had to admit he was right, I did not like it.
Ø  (Although) Admitting he was right, I did not like it.

EXERCISE 4
Join the two clauses or sentences by using participial phrases.

1- He was trained for two years in the United States. He is one of the most skilled workers in the
     factory.
Ø  Trained for two years in the United States, he is one of the most skilled workers in the factory.

2- We hope to earn some extra money. We raise pigs and chickens.
Ø  Hoping to earn some extra money, we raise pigs and chickens.

3- The hotel is situated on the coast. The hotel is full of tourists in summer.
Ø  Situated on the coast, the hotel is full of tourists in summer.

4- After they have finished the training course, they will become specialists on agriculture.
Ø  (After) finishing the training course, they will become specialists on agriculture.

5-The Prime Minister stood by the airplane and waved good-bye to everybody at the airport.
Ø  Standing by the airplane, The Prime Minister waved good-bye everybody at the airport.
